Fellow Questers,

Last week I pointed out how the author described lukewarm Christians. This week I want to share some of what he said about the person who is obsessed with Jesus. The definition of obsessed is: to have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic.

To think it’s okay to hold back, when it comes to following Jesus certainly didn’t come from Scripture. The Bible teaches us we are to give ourselves to him totally, absolutely. Paul said, “We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1) A sacrifice is total, and absolute. Every relationship. Every habit. Every moment of every day.

What Francis Chan defines as a person who is obsessed with Jesus is exactly what a person who is on this Quest should be about. So this week and next week I let his definition of the obsessed become our definition of those who are authentically on the Quest – this adventure to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Quote:
“People who are obsessed with Jesus give freely and openly, without censure. Obsessed love those who hate them and who can never love them back.”
Is there someone in your life you’re trying to love because you think it will change them? Why not just love them, even if they never change or never love you back.
“People who are obsessed with Jesus aren’t consumed with their personal safety and Smiley above all else. Obsessed people care more about God’s kingdom coming on this earth than their own lives being shielded from pain or distress.”
Have you ever avoided speaking to someone about Jesus because it would make you (not that person) unSmileyable and stressed out?
“People who are obsessed with Jesus live lives that connect them with the poor in some way or another. Obsessed people believe that Jesus talked about money and the poor so often because it was really important to Him.”
When was the last time you volunteered, or gave, or reached out to someone who was in need financially? Have you ever said, “I wish I could give more, but…” And you knew the reason you couldn’t give more was because of all the debt you had accumulated in acquiring more things, and more things for yourself.
“Obsessed people are more concerned with obeying God that doing what is expected or fulfilling the status quo. A person who is obsessed with Jesus will do things that don’t make sense in terms of success or wealth on this earth. As Martin Luther put it, ‘There are two days on my calendar: this day and that day.”

What will you do this day that most would say that’s not logical, that’s not necessary, that’s not required – but you know deep down in your heart it is exactly what Jesus would do for that person or in that situation. Why not do it today, or at least tomorrow?

Next week we’ll continue looking at the obsessed person. I hope this is stretching you spiritually, the way it is stretching me.
I doubt if you’ll ever know how much you all mean to me. To be on this journey with you – makes the journey something I look forward to every day.

{Me, too!!} Smiley
