Cap and Trade Markup: Takes us one more painful step down the road to serfdom

The House Energy and Commerce Committee began its consideration of the Waxman-Markey energy bill today, which contains, among other things, a cap and trade scheme that will stifle the country’s energy supply.
By this point, no one needs to be reminded of the pernicious nature of cap and trade, even Democrats have abandoned the term, trying instead to spin the bill as somehow contributing to our economic recovery. But we all know nothing could be further from the truth.
This bill will be a jobs’ killer and a huge drain on our economy if we allow government to enact costly new regulations that will be passed along to consumers. The Heritage Foundation released an analysis today exposing the bill for the dead weight it will be around the country’s neck.
For now, the story is Chairman Waxman’s attempt to buy off moderate Democrats on his committee by offering free emission permits to coal, utility and agricultural interests in their districts. Waxman has also lowered several of the most painful requirements in the bill in order to mollify opposition. While this may seem like a victory for consumers, don’t be fooled. Allowing government to get its hands around the throat of the nation’s energy supply will invariably lead to our strangulation, no matter how loosely they promise to hold their grip today.
The next few days will be critical as committee members weigh their options and decide if they will vote with the American people or with environmental extremists. I know it’s hard to hear over and over, but we need to recognize that today is just another small step along our road to serfdom.
